I wanted to get a Wrangler for a toad but they seem unreasonably expensive to me. Best I could find locally was 10 years old with 100,000 miles for $13,000. I bought a 2014 stick shift Ford Focus with 60,000 miles for $8,000. Works for us.

I bought a 2014 automatic Ford Focus with 19,000 miles for $6,000... works great...
have towed it 30,000+ miles...
(and I'm a long-time Jeep wrangler owner of many different two and four door years and models, and also a 2014 Jeep cherokee latitude owner!)

having said that, Jeep owners are mostly very proud, and certainly will be more inclined to make a concerted effort to 'vote' in such a magazine poll, though I doubt most other owners of other vehicles will...

These are Reader's Choice awards, so I guess people voted on it, but there really isn't a "best" toad for everyone. It all depends on your individual needs. Some folks want a small lightweight toad, some need enough room to carry kids and dogs, some want off-road capability, some want the lowest cost option, etc.
The Jeeps do seem like a good option for a lot of people, though, since they are relatively easy to set up for towing, even if they have an automatic transmission.

Wranglers are expensive for what they are but they hold their value very well. When we bought our 2014 Wrangler new, there was a nice 2012 model on the lot with 30k miles on it where the asking price was more than what we negotiated for our new 2014. I can hookup our wrangler behind our motorhome in less than 5 minutes.

Well, I have to say that based only on casual observations, it sure seems like a vast majority of toads are jeeps...so it makes sense to me.
I wish the standard 2-door jeep wranglers sat 3 in the back seat...
my family won't fit in them as they are, and my MH has a 5,000# limit... so the 4-door versions won't work.... and I have no interest in the more refined SUV's like the wranglers.
I do think a small Jeep could be fun though, and I think that I'd really love to have a stock CJ, or nearly stock anyway... Maybe in a few years when the kids are out of the picture
one of these days I need to weigh DW's Enclave...my bet is that it would squeak under if empty, but with the usual stock of "stuff" in there it would be over...

The correlation between Jeep and Motorhomes could be something deeper than what meets the eye. Since I bought the old '89, I occasionally visit the wrangler forums for advice and tips. Seems the newer Jeeps are really crap, lots of front-end issues, rust from the factory and tons of other little things that are very consistent between the models. BUT...they keep buying them, modifying everything they can, love them more than the spouse and swear there's nothing better in the world. My 1989 "barn find" in Michigan with 68K original miles....$5,000. It came with a tow bar also.

Our limit is 5k as well and we've successfully towed an Escape, a C-Max and my Bolt on a dolly without any issues (all 3 cars are around 3600 lbs give or take a couple of hundred pounds plus the <400 lbs for the dolly brings us to 4000 lbs give or take).

I looked for a used Wrangler too. I couldn’t believe the prices were so high. So, I ended up buying a new Wrangler Unlimited to use as my toad.

Gritz,
There's only one Jeep that I'd like to have more than yours:

I always wondered what time of day you wake up. What headlights are in yours?

Been a Jeep fan a long time. My favorite Jeep was a pickup truck I drove on the farm as a work truck a long time ago. It was very basic. I also drove a panel van Jeep on a different farm as a teenager which was cool too. Both were simple like military Jeeps. Neither even had a radio, and would be considered collectible classics today.
My son has had a few Jeep Wranglers and I have to say his new 4-door is awesome. With V6 and 8-speed it drives great and gets great mileage on highway for a Jeep. I’m really impressed with how quiet it is. I wouldn’t mind buying another if I had time to go off roading.
