Smile Towing with Axis

I’m currently towing a 28ft ATC aluminum car hauler, total weight 8000lbs fully loaded,
Axle weights are maxed out, slightly over on rear, under on front.
I have done all the recommended handling mods (steering dampener, track bar, stabilizer bars, sumos on front only, high caster angle)
I have done a minor reinforcement where the hitch attaches to the frame.
I’m using a Curt weight distributing hitch/sway control system.
The rv drives well with this set-up, I can cruise at 95-100 KPH, one hand on the wheel, Fuel mileage is about 7+ mpg....
I have not seen anyone towing the maximum weight on this forum yet, I just thought I would post my experience with it.

Welcome to the Forum, and i'm glad that your setup is working so well for you!
Speaking personally: I like to stay away from the "edges of the design parameters"; but i can't fault anyone for using what they bought and paid for.

Sounds like it's working for you,I thought you weren't supposed to use a load equalizer on a motorhome though, don't remember where I heard it .

Which Axis? I've got a 25.2 towing a 24 Intech all aluminum car trailer.7500 lbs total weight of trailer. I've done the track bar, front and rear sway bars and of course max amount of caster.Did the reinforcement of frame to tow and use a Curt weight distributing hitch too.My fuel mileage is 8.5 to 9mpg towing at 60 to 65 mph.Only have a slight push when tractor trailer that I can't correct yet.

Why would a motorhome be any different than any other vehicle? Especially when anti-sway is built into the WDH setup.

I tow an 18" open steel/wood deck trailer with Camaro drag car. Is 5200 to 5500 lbs. Keeping the tongue weight at 500 lbs has been a challenge. Everything else I have towed with handles better with more tongue wt. The 24.1 e450 Vegas is the exception. Unit actually handles better with trailer attached. All I have done is set tire pressure and add reflex damper. Minor push from semis, more minor with trailer. Max GCVW we have run down road is 19k, 3000lbs under rating. Performance is good, merging and passing is no issue. MPG stays 9 to 11 regardless of trailer or not.

I'm getting ready to tow a 20 foot trailer with a weight of 6,000 pounds. I'm wondering how's your power up the hills and/or mountains.

Thanks.

I have a Hurricane 34R towing an 18 foot cargo trailer loaded to about 7-7500lbs. I tow up and down some of the steepest grades(seen hwy to hell?). Up the snow shed hill on the Coquilhalla I slow to 35mph but its way better than my fleetwood class a

I'm not having any power issues really, and considering the overall weight, I'd say the performance is very good.
Sure, some hills are slow, but I have passed some 18 wheelers at times.
I do try to keep my speed between 90-100kmph on the highway.
I also have a tpms that shows all 6 tires pressure/temperature continuously, so I can keep tabs on the tires because they are running at their maximum weight rating.
I am planning for a similar tpms for the trailer as well, just for my own peace of mind, as the trailer is actually 2000lbs under it's weight rating.
so far, so good...

Probably because the frames on most class C and many class A motorhomes have had extensions bolted/welded to them. The concern may be that putting additional torsional load on the chassis may cause a failure.

That said —
I just tow a 6k vehicle 4-down, but before I did I checked the bolts on my hitch. It is a Thor after all.. out of the 6 bolts (they used carriage bolts) I found 2 missing and of the remaining 4 only 1 was tight. Also the frame brackets were tack welded to the frame, but one side was welded about 7/16” higher than the other. This meant that the hitch was not level to the ground when the chassis was. I fabricated an appropriate steel spacer and replaced all fasteners with quality grade-8 bolts.

These are the Carriage Bolts Thor used on my hitch and the ones I replaced them with..

Also, you can see how much lower the hitch is on the left side. They had also put the rear bumper on higher on the right side to make it “look” good....
