Experience speaks

It takes three "tags" to cover all possible occasions.
  1. One for the car by itself.
  2. One for the motorhome by itself.
  3. And a third for the motorhome when it is towing the car.
Each of them is billed at a different rate. Only one of them needs to be displayed at a time. Be sure to keep the others in the foil pack when they're not displayed or you may/will be excessively billed. If you do happen to make that mistake and get the extra charges, you can call and plead your case for a refund. But don't bet on getting one.

No, it only takes a single portable transmitter in most systems:

Put it in your MH when not towing, or
Put it in your Toad when not being towed, or
Put it in your MH when towing the toad.

Except for some NE states (like NY) the toll sensors count the axles and charge by total axles regardless of weight.

Not EZ Pass in Virginia. Requires multiple transponders for all situations. EZ Pass is issued to license plate based on number of axles so two are required for motor home. One towing and one not towing.

So if I have an E-Pass extra from Florida which counts axles as I mentioned above and I travel to a state like VA and NY where the E-Pass extra is accepted but that require multiple transponders for different configurations, how is that rectified in the toll charge? Seems that if you are a member of the E-ZPass group you would have to assess tolls in the same manner.

Very Confusing

Well it looks like each state has it's own rules on this subject. Further evidence states should not be allowed to regulate toll fees. Best bet is to just use the manual lanes so you don't get overcharged and so you don't risk getting a fine in the mail.

When you encounter stupid just shake your head and dive right in. :-)

But the E-ZPass system in New York is where this all got started...

Just verified with Virginia EZ Pass that the transponder for a motor home towing must be requested using the axle count for motor home plus toad. When not towing a different transponder for motor home without toad would be required.

No such thing as EZ Pass extra in Virginia although we do have EZ Pass Flex which has a switch to allow HOV lane use without tolls during certain times on certain roads if HOV conditions are met.

In all the years Rv'ing I have only used one toll road and generally pay cash. I do have an EZ Pass in the Jeep and it gets used quite often going into Richmond.

Did you ask them what happens when a transponder from Florida or NC comes though on a MH with a toad? The axles aren't set on those accounts. Do thay just charge for the default 2 axle configuration?

It sounds as if they might (or might not... ) take pictures of the whole shebang; count axles, and square up with you iva the USPS.

No but I asked about me going to other states and the ez pass antenna reads the vehicle type off the transponder.

I believe I’ll get a transponder for my coach now

Has anyone heard of or used this pass? Its supposed to work nationwide with one:
https://www.motor1.com/news/385308/r...wide-coverage/

Here is the company/pass: https://rvtollpass.com/

Looks like its an additional $14.99 every month you use it on top of the tolls.

Not to mention the $100+ purchase price of the transponder.

No thanks

Hey, the cost is a drop in the bucket for them Newmar folks that will have it installed as an OEM item. I didn't see where it could be activated for a specified period of time, say one month or two. Seems kinda like Sirius, hook you in at a teaser rate and then jack up the price.

I got rid of my Maryland E-Z-Pass and went with the Florida E-Pass-Xtra. The transponder was much more expensive, but I am able to use it in a lot more places! So far so good!

What do you call "much more expensive"? They're only $20.
