Tow capassity for 99 Hurricane?

Anyone know what the max tow capacity for a 99 Hurricane 33 SL? Just baught one and it has a 3500 lb hitch. Can it handle 5000 lbs? Called Thor with no help. Too old for the data they had to look at. Nothing in the manual either. Thanks

In short: No. You can only tow as much as the lowest number of all the different components. Since your hitch is only rated to 3500lbs, the max possible you can tow is 3500lbs (maybe less if the GVWR/GCWR numbers work out to less than 3500lbs).

It is possible that you could remove the hitch and put a better one on, but then you'd need to find the other numbers to make sure you're not going over them either.

Thor archive literature starts with 2000 model year for the Hurricane 33SL, and even for that they don't seem to go into tow ratings that I could see quickly.

As Jamie stated, you have to stay within the limits of the weakest link. Personally, I would not consider upgrading the hitch because your 33SL motorhome (assuming its similar to 2000 model year) has a significant rear-overhang frame extension, and there is no way to safely determine how much stronger beyond 3,500-pounds it was designed for.

First step would be to load the RV as you would travel - including passengers, water, fuel (gas and propane), all gear - and weigh it...

I would be very surprised if you had 5000 pounds spare without exceeding GCWR (gross combined weight rating)...

Even if you did - Chance's comment on upgrading the hitch would still be a concern.
