Help with Battery Maintenance on TOAD Set Up

Hello All!

I am bringing my 2016 Challenger 37TB and 2016 Jeep Wrangler Sahara in for a flat tow set up. The mechanic said he has never set up a TOAD battery charge before and is asking for some information. I was hoping you folks could help.

- Is there a 12 volt pin/lead on the Challenger trailer plug? If so, which on is it? Is there a diagram somewhere?

- I bought a Hopkins 39332 BrakeBuddy Towed Vehicle Battery Maintainer. Is this part necessary, or can he just run the 12 volt wire from the Challenger plug to the TOAD battery?

- Is there anything else I should ask for or tell him before the installation?

Other than the maintainer, all the parts are Blue Ox. Base Plate, Alpha and Patriot.

Thanks all,

Bill

Look here: https://www.etrailer.com/faq-wiring.aspx

Your camper has a 7-wire plug on it (that wiring diagram describes a ton of them from 4-wire all the way to 7).

I picked up one of these 7-wire testers to make sure my plug was ok: 7-wire trailer tester (Amazon)

Here's a picture of a 7-way plug. Pin 4 is the one with 12 VDC.

Ed,

Didn't you post in another thread that Thor does not connect the brake controller wire to the plug and that is on the owner of the coach?

I tow a '15 Wrangler with my ACE. I use a RViBrake2. I do not use any Toad battery charger. So far we only tow for about 5 hrs max and have not had any toad battery issues.

I towed a 13 fit with my ace. Over 2 seasons I killed the small but expensive fit battery. I usually did 7 to 10 hour trips. I will be getting a charge line for it.

Dave-- on my 2015 Vegas Thor confirmed that the 7-way is wired with the exception of the blue wire that goes to a brake controller. That would have to be completed as well as power and a ground from under the dash to the brake controller. I'm adding the 12 VDC is wired to pin 4 in the 7-way as well as all the trailer light positions.

Before doing anything I'd have them connect a trailer simulator to confirm what is wired and whether it was done correctly.
