Outside of the initial trip home from the dealer when new (400 miles), I've never run with all tanks empty. I always keep fresh water tank completely full. After dry camping, that water (along with waste) is now in the holding tanks but still onboard. After 4 days at the drag races, I took coach to dump station and emptied all tanks. I then go home, refill FW tank, clean her up and stow her away. I was amazed at the difference in performance when running with all tanks empty!! It's about 700-800 pounds less weight. I've never had a real issue with reserve power but what a difference!! I'll rethink this issue of keeping fresh water tank full all the time except when I know we are heading out for boondocking! It makes me wonder if I might increase fuel mileage a bit. Maybe I need to chew my food a bit longer too!

So, you didn't do a before & after weigh in I take it. I've never really noticed a difference in performance in either of our V10 MH's. But, then again, usually don't dry camp more than 2 days on a weekend. When in a state park or other place with dump sites we dump as we leave.

Nope...not necessary, and what difference would that make to the subject? Thor did the weigh in for me when it was new. I didn't cram everything I own into it and the F550 chassis is not short on power, nor does that suspension come from the factory plagued with stability issues. I know how much weight I pack in and it's well within the limits. It handles very well but my point was how much of a difference the water weight makes vs. running with 1/3 or so of a tank vs full.

So if you noticed the weight difference with your setup: you can only imagine what I would feel with mine... :eek:
(only 325 lb/ft of torque...)

Liquid weighs on the average of 8 pounds per gallon. If you got a 50gal fresh water tank that's about 400lbs for one tank. Add the other 2 tanks and could have near 2000 pounds.

I can't imagine why anyone would have all tanks full, but yes...that would be a lot of weight!

Well good old math works alright when a scale isn't available. Checked his Chateau specs -- Fresh water tank capacity (75 gal), 2 Black tanks (40 gal), 2 Gray tank (40 gal), and gas tank (68 gal). Water weighs little over 8 lbs/gal; gasoline little over 6 lbs/gal.

Worse case, assuming all tanks near full capacity: Water & waste = 155 gal; gasoline = 68 gal. TOTAL WEIGHT =(155 x 8) + (68 X 6) = 1648 lbs.

That's a lot of weight for just gas, water, and waste, equivalent to having an additional eight 200 lb people riding in the RV.

BTW, diesel is closer to 7 lbs/gallon if I recall correctly.

We always run with empty tanks...
(Unless we've got a couple of gallons sloshing around in the black tank for scrubbing purposes... :rolleyes:)

But the fuel tank is exempt from this guideline! :lol:

Yeah, pretty difficult to do — rare occurrence. Only time it’s come close for me was staying overnight at family’s home where I was able to refill fresh water without being able to dump. Even then there’s no point in having extra fresh water if other tanks are nearly full, unless maybe for taking outside shower or washing toys.

I usually drive with fresh water tank full. You never know if you'll need it. Almost always drive with empty black and gray

I don't see how I would feel any driving difference between full or empty fresh tank. 400lbs extra for an 18k chassis is nothing. I'm almost at max weight as it is. To make a difference I'd have to get rid of the wife and all her stuff

A friend of mine broke down on the interstate about 10:00 am on a Sunday. Wrecker finally arrived about 5:00 pm and towed him to a Walmart. Wrecker returned on Monday morning and towed to a Freightliner repair facility He finally got repaired and left on Thursday evening.

I always dump the gray and black tanks and have a full load of water when I travel based on his experience.

Hey Gritz! IdahoPoes here (Four Winds 33SW Super C). I have an inquiry in to Thor on the hose layout beneath my kitchen sink. There is a canvas cover with velcro that I believe is supposed to cover the hose going into the grey tank. However, there is no way to close it off and keep it closed all of the time. Would you look at your under sink area and tell me:


1) If you have the canvas material


2) If the canvas flaps are closed with the velcro


3) If you have any heater hoses traversing that area.

I just carry enough water for use between point a to point b. Makes a big difference in mileage, power and handling. Been doing it that way for 20 plus years.

Ed, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the incredible work you did in composing a very worthwhile and detailed manual for the Thor 24.1 My wife and I are picking up a 2015 Axis 24.1 that only has 6,600 miles on Tuesday.
