The problem wasn't excessive load, too many appliances at one time but was a loose connection and enough load that caused the current to arc from breaker to wire, very much like arc welding. Replace the breaker, cut the wire to where it's clean and re-insert. Double check that all the breakers are tight. Seriously, take the time to check your receptacles too.
