Definitely recommend the supplemental brakes...
My toad is about 3600 pounds - and while I certainly notice it on acceleration - with the braking on (Invisibrake in my case) I have never noticed it on stopping...
If you look at the maps in links in previous post - you can't get more than one or two states away from Florida in any (driveable) direction without hitting a state with a 1000-2000 pound limit.
