I'm not sure about the 3601, but in the 3901 the rear of the fireplace, including the thermostat is in the same compartment as the furnace. So, with ours, the fireplace will only produce heat until the furnace warms up the cabinet. It works perfectly when the furnace is not running (and the water heater is not heating on AC).
