This has been hashed out on the forum a few times. Some folks wouldn't hit the road without a spare, some wouldn't know what to do with a spare if they had it, and some just want it to have in case road service can't find a tire to fit.
I bought road service only when I knew the tires were approaching 5 years old, near the end of their useful life. We blew two tires, front left and then later rear inside. Both times, road service brought a new tire, it took about 4 hours, and the service charged the same price as we paid for the other 4 tires I replaced.
Our Vegas has 21,000 miles with no tire incidents. I do carry a small AC air compressor without a tank, (Sears) which can fill a tire in a few minutes. If I blow a tire without road service, I'll start calling the closest tire shops. Smart phones and improved cell coverage has changed this equation greatly.
