Are you sure the water was entering the tailpipe? Many folks have trouble with the seal across the top of the furnace compartment cover leaking as water runs down the side of the motorhome in rain or washing. There is a little circuit board in there that can get waterlogged and start sputtering the furnace even though it's not turned on.
