RoadTrek makes van campers. There’s a lot to discuss.
How about that RoadTrek mostly builds on RAM ProMaster and Mercedes Sprinter. The RoadTrek CEO a few years ago stated that van camper sales went in the toilet as costs climbed when Dodge got out of “cheaper” vans. Sprinter Euro vans (with high roof and great fuel economy) that replaced the old Dodge were an improvement, but too expensive for their size to grow van market.
He then said that the ProMaster, which cost a lot less than a diesel Sprinter, afforded them the option to return Class B van campers closer to their roots. After Hymer purchased RoadTrek, their combined sales in North America were about 3X that of Thor’s Airstream Class Bs.
Mercedes will be introducing cheaper vans with gasoline engines shortly, but is that enough choices? They’re still expensive. Ford Transits aren’t doing well, and ProMaster design is getting old. In what direction will Thor go?
