Don't know if it would help but most home improvement stores, like Lowes or Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc., sell nylon toilet seat bolts and nuts, that won't rust or corrode. I've seen and used some that have elongated nuts that will fit in to a standard 1/2" or 9/16" socket, which may make it easier to hold them in position so you can get the bolt started. Word of caution: If you decide to use nylon, be careful not to over tighten them...they break easily. Good luck!
