No they are not insulated, it is a quilted material and yes it's great when driving to keep the sun out. We have a full front shade that comes down to have the privacy on the front window. I used a light weight guilted material that hangs heavier than regular material and sewed it to the existing curtain. I got the clips, the role type from Camping World and attached a loop to the curtain extension.The extra material I made a dash cover to protect it from the sun damage.
