The negative terminal should be removed first. Back in the old days, a lot of Ford Ford vehicles had a positive ground. So to be sure take a voltmeter and make sure that there is no voltage between The ground and the negative terminal. If you remove the ground first you have no possibility of causing a short circuit between your wrench and the vehicle sheet metal. Once you have disconnected the ground terminal everything is safe.
