I agree on the switch location, I don't check it every time I walk by either. My light strip on the awning has a break right at the beginning of the strip, I bought a new strip that comes with a pigtail, and grounds up on the awning, I may just run a ground wire up in the switch box, I know I'll notice a pilot light.
