We are planning gas stops a maximum of 450 miles apart, so even 8.5 miles per gallon will get us there. We are using gas buddy for fuel planning and it really helps save. The good news is gas is down some, we may be as much as .40 per gal under initial budget.
The bad news is temperatures are looking to be in the high 90s for the next few days. And our first stop is a hot springs?
We are also using the Roadside America website to find some obscure and unusual places to visit.
Yes, we are obviously anal when it comes to planning. Head em up! Move em out!

Have a great trip and have fun
On my recent 6000 mile trip I fueled up every time at the end of the days drive. About 30 miles from the camp site I'd look for a gas station to fill up using gas buddy
It was nice to alway have a fuel tank when starting a drive. I get 600+ miles per tank but always filled at half tank on longer drives
