I second highway 50, although I’ve only taken it from Gunnison west to Moab. We have come in from the south on 149 up to Hwy 50, and then traveled west to Moab. Google map shows it’s only a 2 hour 10 minute difference from Denver to Moab versus Interstate 70, although I would add time to drive through The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. I was forced through on a detour years ago and found it a beautiful drive. It was a little slower but well worth the time, and is on my list of places to visit next time we’re in Colorado.

We stayed one night at a campground on Hwy 50 at east end of Blue Mesa Reservoir by where 149 meets Hwy 50. As I recall there are numerous campgrounds off the reservoir along Hwy 50.
