The steps are manufactured by Lippert Components. Determine which model steps you have and then go to their website and download the appropriate manual. It should give you the location of the wiring and I believe if you unplug the motor, which should be mounted to the steps, that should prevent the steps from trying to go down. As a temporary measure go to an RV dealer and purchase a portable step in the height required.
Were your steps by any chance ones that were under the Lippert recall?
