You don't have to run out and get a cover right away. Storing it for a few days/weeks without it covered won't hurt.

If you are worried about the finish put a good coat of wax on it (keep in mind that it will take a while to wax the whole thing).

I cover ours over the winter since putting the cover on and remove it can be a bit of a pain thus covering it only in winter means putting the cover on once at the end of the season, and removing it at the start of the next season.

During the season we keep all the curtains closed, plug all the ceiling vents, and use foil in the front window to keep the UV out of the inside and fading the fabrics.
