I flat towed a rail buggy behind my dad's 4X4 pickup when I was in school. It backed up fine once I got over letting the front tires skid across the pavement.

In this case it didn't hurt anything and the truck didn't even notice it. The front end of the buggy, made from VW Beetle, was pretty light though.

I've since thought that a street legal dune buggy would make a nice toad.
