Assuming you have two 12v batteries:
The batteries should be wired together positive to positive and negative to negative (parallel) to maintain 12v.
The positive wire (red) coach should be attached to the positive terminal on battery 1 and the ground/negative wire (black) from coach should be attached to negative terminal on battery 2 to best balance the load.

With two 6v batteries:
The batteries should be wired together negative on battery 1 to positive on battery 2 (series) to provide 12v.
The positive wire (red) coach should be attached to the positive terminal on battery 1 and the ground/negative wire (black) from coach should be attached to negative terminal on battery 2 to obtain 12v power (not a matter of balancing load as in above case... only way to get 12v here.)

And I was looking for the exact link scrubjaysnest provided as I was typing to shows pics and why....
