I cant speak to the replacement issue but to troubleshoot the short if there is one you will need a VOM or volt, ohm, amp meter. If you are not familiar with measuring current you might want to leave this to someone else. You can disconnect the positive battery cable put your meter in the 10 amp mode and connect the meter between the + battery terminal and the cable end you disconnected. You will then be reading the standby or leakage current your unit is drawing with everything off. Then one at a time start pulling fuses and watch the meter to see when the current draw drops significantly.
That fuse feeds the problem circuit. Be aware that you must wait at least an hour after you shut everything off before you start the testing. Many newer vehicles computers run diagnostic testing even after the engine has been shut off. The meter may never read zero but it should be way down in the milliamp range. Once you have the circuit isolated you can put the fuse back in and start disconnecting each component or plug on that line until you see the current drop again and you will have located your problem. The actual fix after that will depend on what caused the issue.
