It could be the TRANSFER SWITCH, that automatically cuts between shore power and Genny. If you say you have lights when generator is running, then your converter is working. We had the same issue and thought we had blown something big, but was just wires in the transfer switch not making good connection.
I am not sure you could check this out without a volt meter, though
