Joe, I had a similar problem that drove me nuts. I even replaced the coil, fuel pump and carb where new and the filter was not restricted. I turned out to be air in the fuel line after running the main fuel tank a little too low. I simply pulled the fuel line off the carburetor and put it into a jar while running the fuel pump to purge the line. Worked like a charm after that. Intermittent fuel supply or air in the line can be very frustrating to diagnose.
