It's very simple. Look at the shore power plug. You have 4 terminals - L1, L2, N and G. Each of the 2 hot legs can provide up to 50 amps. Want proof? Look at the power pedestal and you'll find that the 50 amp receptacle is protected by 2 linked 50 amp breakers. Therefore, 50 amp service can provide 120 volts x 50 amps/hot leg x 2 hot legs = 12,000 watts.
30 amp service, on the other hand, has only 1 hot leg. Therefore, it can provide 120 volts x 30 amps/hot leg x 1 hot leg = 3,600 watts.
