Having tried several attempts to stop it...I finally detached the cluster of wires to the generator.

I checked the Onan Troubleshooting site and found no reference to this problem.

If the fuel pump was running that may indicate that it thought someone was holding down the stop button (e.g. prime). Perhaps you have a short somewhere shorting the stop/prime contact.
