That button at the end of the shift lever is for Tow/Haul mode and it is designed to help both going up and down hill grades. It will change where the engine shifts to provide more torque and power going uphill and stay in lower gear going downhill to allow the engine to do much of the braking and not have to ride the brakes. When you press the button, a Tow/Haul icon should show on the dash.
