Unscrew the oil fill plug. Some have a little dipstick on them to check oil level. Otherwise, just look in the oil fill hole. Oil should be up almost to the opening and just below where it would overflow and run out. Just FYI, many, if not most, newer engines now have low oil shutdown sensors that will turn engine off if oil gets too low. I would think your generator has such a feature.
