Regarding protection from a blowout, most newer cars I've seen have light plastic front wheel wells held on with plastic hardware. I doubt they could stop a large piece of tire traveling at over 100 MPH (and I don't mean driving that fast).

Personally, I'd be more concerned about whether a bad blowout could damage the floor separating the driver's and passenger's feet from the tire. In many Class As the driver and passenger ride just over the tires.
