My bay looks to be quite a bit deeper than yours, but I have so far used it for my tools and such.
I have been wanting to come up with a nice shelf unit to put in there to better use the space for easy grab stuff, since it's the hatch under the awning just outside the door.

Mine is probably same as yours about 4-1/2 - 5" deep. Handy for tools cor sure!
