Question about the main circuit breaker, 120vac.

During my troubleshooting on my converter will my multi meter, (of which turned out to be bad);
I discovered that in the 120vac buss, with all the breakers off, there was no power there, while plugged into shore power, until the main breaker switched on.

Checking more, the 120vac was present on the wire side of the breaker, even with breaker kicked to off position, to me, this was the exit side of the breaker.
You know they look similar, if not the same, as you find in a household panel.

So I wonder, does the breaker still work the same, with the direction of electric flow (current), going in either direction?

Not totally sure, as why I ask, even though the answer seems evident.

When the breaker is turned OFF, you will still show 120V on one side of the breaker, where the feed from the shore power is coming to the breaker. The other side of the breaker should show 0 volts.

When the breaker is ON, you should show 120V on both sides of the breaker.

This is normal. The MAIN breaker feeds the breaker box buss so it is hot on the wire side but cold on the buss side when off. This is the opposite of distribution breakers which clip onto a hot buss but have the wire side cold when off.

The main breaker (30 amp) wire at the bottom is where shore power is routed to the power center bus. The wire to the 30 amp breaker will be live when on shore power or generator power, as this circuit breaker powers the power center bus. All other circuit breakers work the opposite way, as they take power from the bus and supplies current to the wire attach to them. If you have a 50 amp power center, it works the same way except you have a twin 50 amp circuit breaker instead of a 30 amp that divides the incoming power into twin power buses.

Thanks for all the replies.
I kind of figured it was okay, just never seen it this way, and thought well maybe I'd ask.
