Another battery question.

Is there an advantage to having 2 six volt batteries over 1 twelve volt?

Lot! There's plenty to learn on this topic. The mfr wants to get by as cheap as possible and we want to get the most utility for our $$. A recent thread will get you started but don't stop there. Seach the forums and educate yourself, you'll be money ahead. http://www.thorforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10168

Yup: It's an improvement!

But I'm not smart enough to explain it: wait for the experts to chime in with the reasons.

Quick! Close that can of worms; they'll be all over the place again with rumors and mis-information.

Well, I got beat up pretty badly when I posted that I switched out my two factory 12 volt batts for two 6 volt AGM batteries which were pretty costly $$$. That's okay, it works for me.... I turned off my reading eyes when the conversation veered to lithium ion batteries....

We'll all be driving lithium (Fe) batteries... down the road. Ain't technology great?

What are their relative size or capacity? Or are you asking about doubling battery capacity?

If the question is more specific, the answers may be more meaningful. It's hard to compare 1 battery versus 2 when you haven't even mentioned capacity. Battery voltage may make a difference but others factors are as important or more so.

There is an advantage to having more available capacity at 12v... Whether that is accomplished with 12v batteries in parallel (add capacities) or 6v batteries in series (add voltages) or some parallel/series arrangement of other battery technology is up to you...
The physical size and number needed can be a deciding factor - and our course the size of your wallet.
You will get different answers on which is 'better'...

And the most important part - it works for you...

I had an RV with four 6-volt batteries for the chassis. After replacing them once and then having to replace them again in about three years, I replaced the four six-volt batteries with three twelve-volt batteries (I couldn't fit four 12-volt batteries into the compartment). The twelve-volt batteries were easier to find and they worked as well and lasted longer than the six-volt batteries.

Now on our current RV, I am using two AGM 12-volt batteries that I bought from Batteries Plus Bulbs. They have an incredible capacity.
