Antenna vs Cable Reception

We spend a great deal of time in our coach. We spent a single night at a rather well treed campground - that is code for our satellite couldn't get clear signal. SOO - I plugged into the campground cable tv. I actual made a mistake setting up our 28" Seiki TV in our bedroom and stumbled onto a great find - I think. To begin with I replaced our living room TV with a 43" Hisense Smart TV - a really nice upgrade.

Back to the Seiki TV. I scanned for channels on the antenna vs cable built in tuner. Wow - got all the channels that I was getting from the cable scan on the living room TV. I looked and sure as anything, the signal booster was on.

So here is a question - has anyone else tried this. Conditions were:

1. Cable input connected to the coach cable system.
2. Antenna booster was on.
3. Scan was done on the antenna side of the tuner.

This worked GREAT!. Hopefully it was not a 1 time special situation deal.

I didn't think that it was supposed to work that way...

But I'm glad that it did for you!!

Can you please try to replicate this?

Bob - I was very surprised at what was going on with the clarity of signal. To be sure - I double checked the channels and made sure the antenna was down. Check and check. Huh!

The newer Seiki TVs have both the ATSC and QAM tuners.

Was the bedroom Seiki TV not able to pick up the "cable" stations before when selecting "cable"? I have the issue of not finding channels when hooked to cable in some campgrounds, which I understand has to do with the Qam tuner.

If I understand you correctly I should try connecting to cable, turning on the booster for the antenna, and scan for Antenna channels...not cable...in those situations where Qam is the problem?

gbrown - I don't think my Seiki got the memo. Stumbled across the tuner issue about 3 years ago at Fort Wilderness. A single TV in our upper bunk bed worked. The rest - not so much. I carry a digital tuner box that I used this last winter. The new HiSense was as much an upgrade on screen size as it was for the tuner. Plus I got it new for $199. To good a deal to turn down for a Full HD TV.

Miramar Owner - I am not sure rather or not I had a digital signal. My new HiSense simply went through and found on the channels. Then I turned on the bedroom Seiki in the manner I outlined. And it worked great!

Antenna vs Cable Reception

I have just recently been informed that we too will have problems when going to Ocean Lakes Campground Myrtle Beach, SC with our Seiki tvs. I have three 32" Seiki model number SE32HYM and was informed last pm by Seiki.com that my tvs did not have the QAM tuner. It is a real shame that Thor put these cheap CHINESE tvs in our motorhome. We haven't experienced problems at any of the campgrounds before now. We camped at Anchor Down August 2017 and did not experience any problems. I think that Thor should step up to the plate and either offer to replace the Seiki tvs with ones that are digital cable ready or offer some type of refund. I don't think my next motorhome will be a Thor!!! When I called Ocean Lakes, the lady said that all I would have to do is rescan for channels. Friends of ours that was there last week said that was not true. They went out to Walmart and replaced all three of their tvs. Having to replace tvs because of Thor's lack of customer service is ridiculous.

Carole H - before we upgraded our living room TV, I used a digital converter box bought at Amazon. It worked very well. I installed it and used it as a second source on our HDMI distribution box using the inbound cable connection to the "in" side of the box. Make sure that you set the converter box to cable. The main issue with doing this, only 1 channel can be seen on all TVs. This was before I bumped up against what I reported above.

IVIEW-3200STB-A, Digital Converter Box with Recording and Media Player, Analog to Digital, Support QAM Tuner, PSIP, Channel 3/4, HDMI, USB, Antenna Included

As our TVs get smarter: does that mean that we can get dumber?
