Boondocking

This is my first time RVing while boondocking. I purchased two additional batteries for my 2018 Thor Chateau 31y. Aside from using the generator, how do I run the electric systems directly from my batteries? Is there a switch I need to flip?

If you have an inverter, it will run some 110V circuits off of the batteries. If you don't, you are limited to 12V systems only. I don't believe your model comes with an inverter as standard.

Thor Chateau's don't come with an inverter. We bought a 2018 recently and are in the process of converting it to be able to run off-the-grid. Meaning, not having the plug in or use the generator except for A/C. We upgraded to 4 new 12V AGM batteries, installed a 400 W Renogy Solar charging system, and an 3000W inverter/switch and charger unit (total cost approx. $2,200). The only way to run everything (except a/c) off the batteries in a Chateau is to add an inverter (solar is optional, but we boondock a lot, so we need it). We are also in Colorado, so if you want more information message me back and we can connect to tell you more.

Has nothing to do with Chateau...mine has inverter. It's all based on whether you have residential fridge or not.

I wonder if he was ever able to get his rig "Boondocking-Ready"?

If not, he's drinking warm beer and hatching baby chicks in the fridge.

I also have a 2018 Chateau (31E), and I'm interested in adding an inverter and maybe solar. We don't do a lot of boondocking, but we'd like to be able to use a TV and electrical outlets without starting the generator while driving or those occasional times when we are boondocking.

Can you give some more details on your inverter & solar installation? What specific parts are needed? Where is the inverter mounted? Does it automatically switch when you plug into shore power or run the generator? Since it's "pre-wired" for solar, what does that mean? Did you install it yourself or have a shop do it?

Thanks

having Solar if you don't yet have an Inverter will only allow you to use 12v power, not 120v for TVs and outlets...

so, it sounds like you really want to simply purchase an off-the-shelf power Inverter, found easily in the W*mt tire section, or any auto parts store. Some use your 12v power outlet, and some have alligator clips that connect directly to your batteries(probably the best option)... these Inverters have outlets on them, and USB outlets, too... so you just simply plug in your items and enjoy.
You may also want several extension cords to reach your TVs, etc., but it's a good and simple way to have 120v power, at least for the few times you are 'off grid'...

I, personally, would not go to the cost or effort to install solar or a hardwired inverter, just for the 'infrequent' need for off-grid power.

of course, some TVs are 12v, like our bedroom Jensen, so you can use the TV while only on 12v battery power, but most folks like to use a satellite Antenna, and receiver, and therefore need 120v power anyway.

I too have a Chateau and recently discovered enough room for 4-12v batteries under the steps. The front ones are tough enough. I'm wondering how the heck you install the rear ones! The terminal block (second pic) has enough room for two more cables.

Do you:
- Drop the rack and then try to reinstall it with the batteries in the tray? (My name isn't Arnold)
- Slide the batteries to the back and try to install the cables in the space between the battery and chassis? (Can you say zzz-zzz-poof!?)

Please don't say take it to a dealer.
