Built In Surge Protector

Does anybody know if the 2021 Four Winds 31w has a built-in surge protector?

More than likely no. Thor doesn’t install items such as that on entry level rigs.

If they did: tit might be built into the ATS.
The Southwire ATS that I have; does double-duty.

Thor doesn’t use high end. They use the cheapest Progressive Dynamics they can get away with. Tiffin is not TMC.

For the record... in spite of having one hard-wired into my system: I till use a Progressive Dynamics EMS at the pedestal. I'd rather catch a problem out there...

I do the same. Surge protector into pedestal, turn on the breaker to check, turn off the breaker and plug in the coach then turn on the breaker.

BTW there is a heck of a difference between surge protection and EMS. They are not the same in any way. EMS will generally have built in surge protection but surge protectors generally do not have EMS.

We just got a 2021 FW 28A and it did not have a surge protector or EMS. After researching, I opted to install the Huges Autoformers Watchdog EMS hardwired unit. It uses bluetooth to send info to your phone and will send alerts if there is a problem.

Interesting idea of using the pedestal surge protector in addition to the hardwired unit. They're only about $100, so that would be cheap insurance while still having EMS on the rig. I don't like the idea of a $2-300 unit sitting outside all chained up to a post.

I also have a circuit tester for the pedestal that i use before I plug in the coach.

So they ARE the same in the way that both offer surge protection,,,,, that’s all some folks are interested in.

Same: identical, not different.

They are not the same. EMS is different than a surge protector. Why do you want to muddy the waters for other members asking advice?

How about if we agree that they both will do their best to protect you from power surges...

... But that the EMS will do a better job of doing a whole lot more!

Surge protectors are just that. They absorb a voltage spike that would fry not only electronics, but wiring as well.

An EMS will detect if a pedestal is wired incorrectly, voltage coming in that is too low or too high and shut down that power down and check after a minute or so and restore the power of it is correct.

Some protection is better than non.

Not really interested in arguing with anyone and of course they are different. That’s why they have different names. But to say they are not alike IN ANY WAY is misleading if someone is looking for surge protection. They should look at both.

Oh… I see the problem. It looks like I said they are not the same in any way and then went in to say they are alike. My first paragraph was a pull quote and that isn’t clear. My apologies for the confusion I caused!
