Xantrex Upgraded 48V eGEN Battery-Electric System

Finally a significant design option/upgrade from Xantrex for their eGEN battery-electric system. It’s called FREEDOM eGEN MAX.

Over three years ago Xantrex introduced the original eGEN battery-electric system based on 12V, 600 Amp-hour LiFePO4 batteries, and 3,000-Watt inverter/charger. This was a cheaper option to Volta design and was quickly adopted by various Class B van manufacturers.

Xantrex recently announced a higher capacity system marketed towards larger motorhomes, although I suppose it could be installed in van campers also. The new system is available in 12V, 24V, and 48V, with 48V appearing to be their main focus.

Brochure shows a new EX 4,000-Watt 48 VDC inverter/charger with 90 Amps of battery charging capability (equivalent to 360 Amps at 12 VDC), allowing for fast battery charging to capitalize on lithium technology.

The brochure also makes reference to 48 VDC X 300 Amp-hour battery, equivalent to 1,200 Amp-hours if at 12 VDC. That’s roughly twice the size of original 600 Ah eGEN batteries used in vans, so should better support Class A and C motorhomes.

Thoughts on larger “MAX” system? Personally, I’m happy to see Xantrex finally offer a 48V system. It was about time.

In addition to fast charging, a nice feature is integrated 48Vdc to 12 Vdc converter.

The battery pack with built-in BMS (Battery Management System), voltage regulator and heating pad enables optimal performance in all temperatures. The proprietary DC pump and air compressor deliver heating and air conditioning through front factory vents and roof top. A key part of the system is the new FREEDOM EX 4K 48Vdc inverter/charger with a built-in 48Vdc to 12Vdc converter. The FREEDOM EX 4K cranks out 90A at 48Vdc for exceptionally fast battery recharging in addition to providing 4000 watts AC power and 12Vdc power for DC loads.
