"Propane is cleaner and requires less maintenance."
Not when compared to a diesel.

Sounds like LP is the right choice for you.
An 'extend a stay' and a few 20lb propane bottles may be all you need if your use changes a little.

^^Agree^^as little as you plan to use generator, you can install the Extend-A-Stay and use portable bottles to supplement your supply. There's a reason for the diesel up charge but if you don't need it...don't buy it.

Keep in mind there are storage and transport issues with 20# bottles.

Everything is a sacrifice with RV's. They most likely will never need extra bottles. If so, get a rear carrier rack or carry them in the toad.

If you store them in the Toad: you might want to install a "Blast shield" between it; and your RV...
Just in case it ever got hit hard in a traffic stop...

And perhaps a blast shield between the on-board propane tank and the occupants would be a good idea as well.

I own a Class B diesel sprinter with propane gen. Works great. Always starts (unlike the gas 4KW gen on my previous Thor which would gum up if you didn't run it for a couple of wks). We don't boondock so no issues about running low on propane. Consider: you can buy a lot of propane for $6,000. Not much to service on it either.

If the motor home is diesel I would also get a deselect gen set. It will be more cost effective in the long run.

We have a 2018 Thor Freedom Elite Mercedes Sprinter with the propane generator. We have to dry camp for two of the three months we stay at Key West Naval Air Station RV park. I run the onboard generator periodically to exercise it, but our main power comes from two Honda 2000i gas generators. Cheaper to run and maintenance less expensive. I also added a Camco Extend-a-Stay valve to the propane tank, that allows connecting it to a 20 lb propane tank if needed (and also a connection for grill).

I had a Thor Citation Sprinter for four years. We rarely boondock and or run the generator for long periods of time. Since our travel pattern was more touring than camping the propane generator was fine. No maintenance issues at all, it started readily every time we needed it. But if you're anticipating heavy use of both the furnace and oven, plan on buying propane frequently.

And, there you have it. A resounding vote for whatever YOU want! LOL It all boils down to your needs, budget and preference. Enjoy the new coach whatever generator you end up with!

we have a 24 Thor sr 2015 with propane. No smell, works fine but we do not use much. Why would u want to use up your diesel fuel up? You need that . We had a diesel generator on a 39 foot boat. It stunk. We have the 2015 Thor 24 sr with 2 slides. Excellent condition. Thinking of selling. We are in Western NC let me know if you have any interest

I have a Sprinter Diesel Freedom Elite with a propane generator. I did notice that my motorhome has a 68 Gal. propane tank vs the usual 48 so i am assuming that the larger tank is because of the generator.
The Fuel tank is smaller at 26 gal vs the Gas tanks of 55 gal. Again designed for the LP generator. If you had a diesel generator you would be stopping for fuel ever hour.
If its designed for LPG then i would leave it that way or else you will have other issues you didn't think about.
Just my opinion.

The fuel tank is 26.4 gallons; because that's what Mercedes puts in them.
The diesel generator uses very little fuel. About four hours of running ours used just under a gallon of juice.

It’s 68 pounds of propane, not gallons. That’s a huge difference.
Compared to E-Series motorhomes with smaller propane tanks, but gasoline generators, yours has about 6 gallons of extra propane.

Six extra gallons will go a pretty long way, when feeding the generator...
But the furnace would be another matter!

Fortunately, most campers won’t need to run their generator and furnace a lot at same time. Generators often get a lot of run hours powering air conditioning in hot weather, so extensive use of furnace is less likely at same time.
Besides, a small MH requires less heat in winter, so 68-pound LPG tank should last a while.
