Residential Fridge
We're new at this. We took our Tuscany out for the first time. The residential fridge seems to run only when we're om shore power or when the generator is running, but not when we're driving. Unless I'm missing something, which I probably am, how do you keep food chilled while driving the motorhome from place to place?

I'm a newbie also, but I believe you want to have your "store/use" switch set to Use, and your inverter switched on.

That is correct. The inverter powers the fridge from your batteries, which are being charged by the alternator while on the road.

Thanks for the quick replies. You were right about the inverter. Turned it on and the fridge worked just fine, along with the microwave.

We run our residential refrigerator off the inverter while underway. Never a problem, even after 8-10 hour drives. I do turn off the ice maker, as that is a very heavy current draw.

I guess I'm not figuring out the high power draw of the ice maker. Does the fridge/freezer have to work harder when the "warmer" water enters the freezer? Or, just the electric motor dumping the ice?

The heating element that allows the cubes to be dumped uses a lot of power. Leaving the ice maker off eliminates that power draw.

Thanks for the help. The fridge is on with the generator running. Thanks for the tip about the ice maker, I hadn't thought about its power draw.

But while underway isn't your alternator on the engine charging batteries anyway? Why would there be a concern about an extra power pull from the ice maker?

True, but when we stop - fuel, lunch, etc, I just don’t want the ice maker on. Maybe it’s just me.
