“Happiness isn’t getting what you want, it’s wanting what you got.”

For the rest of us who want something new, Ford said they expect their 7.3L V8 to be most powerful in class, which should therefore exceed Chevy’s new but smaller 6.6L V8. At same 70 lb-ft per liter, that would put the new pushrod Ford around 500 lb-ft, which would be a significant improvement over the outgoing 6.8L V10.

In the meantime, Chevy previews the new truck with a few new images and specs on the all-new 6.6L V8 that is rated at 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. Naturally, the 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel is also there with 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque and a new 10-speed Allison automatic transmission.

I’m guessing the opposite based on specs. This new engine seems designed to keep costs low, like they know few people can afford $100,000 trucks. Companies certainly won’t buy many work trucks at that price. Pushrods, cast iron block, and no direct injection seems like formula to keep costs down.

There is nothing wrong with a simple pushrod engine for this kind of application. Ford originally claimed lower fuel consumption, but we’ll have to see data first. Anything in the 400+ HP and 500+ lb-ft torque range should sell well if problem free.

Ya wonder at what point it will stop. Pickups (historically light duty) have now become the new medium duty truck chassis...especially since they've all gone to the 450/4500 and 550/5500 Series in the pickup cab configuration. Wonder what Dodge (Fiat RAM) has up their sleeve?

Here is another informative video interview with a Ford engineering manager which mentions the new transmission by model as the 10R140. He says it’s the same physical size as the present 6R140 and weighs only 3-1/2 pounds more. The significance of the model number is that it is related to torque capacity, so it can handle the PowerStroke’s torque.

For what it’s worth, he also talks briefly about upgrade changes to the 6.7L PowerStroke.

New Engine

We have to remember that whatever the new powerstroke is, it will probably not be in the front of a Class A stripped chassis.

I agree the 6.7L PowerStroke V8 will not likely end up in the F53 stripped motorhome chassis. Ford could have done it years ago if it made sense to them. The upgrades the engineer mentioned in video were most likely needed in order to increase power and torque; which will be announced later. He mentioned most stressed components like block, rods, etc.

As far as the gas engine to replace the V10 in the F53 motorhome chassis, you’d have to think it has to be the new 7.3L V8. The smaller 6.2L V8 hasn’t had the GCWR required for F53 motorhomes, plus the new 7.3L V8 is planned for larger trucks from F-450 to F-750.

Whether the F53 motorhome gets the 10R140 initially, or stays with 6R140 transmission for the time being, is something worth watching. My guess is that Ford will combine the 7.3L with the 10-speed only, but my guessing hasn’t been that accurate lately. With more power and torque they may offer the 6-speed as a lower-cost option, although I expect they will replace it entirely before long based on what they have done in past. Once 5-speed came out, 4-speed was soon gone except in smaller engines, and same with 5-speed to 6-speed switch.

They'll probably keep bulking them up, until they can slide another class of light-duty (or compact truck) beneath them...

Just as Ford re-introduces the Ranger...looks like the older full size pickups. Soon...they will come with auto-fold out ladders when you open the door and tissue dispensers built in the dash for nose bleeds. I love big trucks!!

Who doesn't?
I always figured that you would soon be able to just cut a hole in the flooring, and drop a rope down to the ground.

You can, but at our age, you need a winch.

This should be a game changer. A gas engine in commercial trucks has been non-existent for years. Diesel upgrade is $15-20K over gas, but a must for lots of applications. This should perform to what previous diesels have done. Engine savings, plus the consistent 80 cents per gallon less than diesel will be huge. Very interesting.

Regarding RVs, I hope Ford installs the new 7.3L in E-Series cutaways as expected (since it’s replacing the V10s). Ford engineers say this engine is narrower than 6.2L SOHC (and presumably V10 also), so I would like to see Ford make this 7.3 the sole engine for E-Series, and rework the engine doghouse to provide more foot room. If it’s narrower as claimed (and it looks narrower to me), I’d like to see Ford take advantage of it in cutaways.

The V8 may be a little shorter than V10 also, so maybe they can move the doghouse forward a bit too. Even an inch or two in any direction would be a welcome revision if it provides more space for feet.

I know E-Series is being phased out, but if they plan on keeping it for at least 5 more years, whatever cost to revise the firewall and floor sheet metal for a smaller doghouse should be worth it.

I'm sure that they'll put it in the E's...
But they'll set up the upcoming replacement chassis to be optimized for it!

Ford should also consider using the F-150’s 3.0L V6 PowerStroke in lighter GCWR E-series, like the E-350. That compact Diesel engine should also allow reducing the doghouse size somewhat.

I’ve driven over 200,000 miles in E-Series (all with the V10), and the cramped space around engine is probably my biggest dislike.

I have long legs and big feet and own a 1995 GMC Vandura. I moved the seat track back about two inches. Big difference.

That's cheating!
Besides: I couldn't move the seats in the Outlaw back at all. I was up against the wall between the chassis, and the coach!
