ACE 29.4 Wind Whistle Found (1 of them)

I have found one of the wind whistles that was very loud on our ACE 29.4 when driving above 50 MPH. If you look from the sides at the top of the Motorhome you will notice a channel that the awning fabric slides into. This runs all along the top (on both sides) and the open channel creates a whistle when high speed wind runs across it. I took 3/8" round foam backer rod and stuffed it into the channel to fill in the gap. The wind whistle has been reduced significantly (not completely gone) and driving down the road is much more comfortable to our ears.

Did you run it the full length?

I just got the 2017 ACE and it has the same whistle! It drives me crazy but I haven't been able to locate the cause. I'm hoping it is the same channel that you located.

Please post a picture of what you did, if possible.

If you have flush mount windows next to driver & passenger, you might want to run a brand of silicon along the top & front. A minor gap will produce a high pitch whistle starting at about 40 mph. Dealer did that to correct a whistle I had in my Vegas.

I hear a "whistle" at about 55 that my wife cannot hear. It almost sounds like brakes squealing... It doesn't drive me crazy, but it is coming pretty close.

I initially only had enough to do the first 3 to 4 feet at the front on both sides. This gave me the initial reduction in wind whistle. I just bought enough foam last night to fill the channel on both sides all the way down. I am going on a trip this week so I will find out if that helps even more.

I did run a bead of sealant along the front of the driver's and passenger's front windows. This did help some also. I will try along the top as well and see if that helps more. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have a 2016 29.3. Most of my whistle was coming from the Grill. It has a honey comb pattern and would whistle at high speeds. I put a screen door grill (meant to protect the screen from dogs etc.) Over the grill and whistle is completely gone. While doing this I also noticed that there is a huge opening in the A-Pillers leading directly into the engine compartment. Wind and road noise was "blowing" directly into the RV. I used some spray foam to seal the A-Pillars and that helped a ton.

Wow! Can you upload pictures of what you did? I am sure the Ace community would appreciate it. Thanks!

This is the honey comb pattern of the grill cover. As you can see it is about 1/2" deep. Which makes for a big array of whistles.

I picked up a screen door protector from Home Depot. These are used to keep dogs from jumping through the screen. This one looked open enough to not effect airflow over the radiator. All I was really looking for is to create turbulence to eliminate the whistle.

Here is the protector over the honey comb grill. The Whistle now only shows up at a very specific speed (depending on the wind) and at 1/10 its previous level. Before this fix it would whistle at any speed between 50 and 70 mph and it was louder than normal speaking level.

This is the A-Pillar on the passenger side (rotated 90 degs). If you pull back the plastic covering you will see daylight. That is because Thor did not properly seal between the plywood and the engine compartment. I saw this while installing reading lamps in the cockpit.

This is the view of the A-Pillar from the engine compartment. The yellow foam is what I added. The gray foam was what Thor added. As you can see the gray foam is hardly useful. After adding the foam it made a huge difference in noise. BTW also look at your mudroom There was a 1 1/2" gap between the mudroom floor and the wall where the mudroom sliding door is mounted. I could see straight down to the road. I foamed that as well. All this helped a lot with heating and cooling as well.

From information on another thread, I have replaced my front grill and now when traveling there is no more loud whistle. It is like night and day difference!
