How far can you tow with an EV (Model X)

Here is that family again (the one that got a smaller trailer to pull behind their new Model X) going on a 600 mile road trip:

Of course this confirms that EVs lose a bit more miles than gas vehicles do due to towing (~100 miles so 1/3 the range).

When we had the bumper-pulls and the 5th wheel our gas pickups (Ranger, F-250, and F-350) would lose about 1/2 the miles, give or take (I'm sure there is less range loss on a Diesel).

Note their power consumption towing ~900+ wH/mile about 3x normal (which is what you'd expect for 1/3 the range).

If you run out of gas: getting someone to bring a five-gallon can of juice is easy to arrange.
Can you get "five gallons" of voltage delivered to the side of the road?

Ah but either case is evidence of bad planning.

Also Note that AAA has vans pulling generators for just such a situation for EV drivers (doubtful that they are everywhere, however).

Agreed; poor planning.
But the ability to recover from these oversights can be considered a factor.
(I didn't know about the AAA Vans: thanks!

Add a hill of any consequence and that hill will eat them down to 30 miles or so range... In theory.

They did drive through South Dakota--rather hilly there (hills, not mountains).

I don't know. Get around the Black Hills and 18A and things tend to get a little challenging.

And you're right, we're not talking Pike's Peek.

Yeah, they came in from the East on I-90 (they did stop at the Corn Palace, and Al's Oasis in Chamberlain). I-90 along there has those long rolling hills.

Our first trip out that way we were pulling a 21ft TT behind a Ranger (V6). The Ranger was chugging a bit going up those long rollers...

What year Ranger and how much did the TT weigh? I have a 2004, 3.0, 5spd. I moved from DE to FL towing a heavily weighted uhaul trailer and she still got 21mpg. Sometimes 22.

So the hills had the same usage as the flats?

1998 Extended Cab Flareside Autumn Orange--no Chrome all black trim (so orange truck with black trim--it was really sharp). 4.0L 160HP 225 ft-lb Torque 5-speed auto

Sadly I don't have any pics of it--it was just prior to digital camera's. I have bunches of pics of the vehicles after that one LOL.

That's ok. I have the 3.0 manual. She's still ticking. Best car I ever owned, and that's a fact. I'll drive it until drops.

I saw a video of another Tesla situation where a guy was carrying a honda generator in the trunk along with a can of gas to keep his car juiced up on the road.

Didn’t they recharged every 70 miles or so? I drive that distance every hour, and if I had to stop to charge, I’d give up and stay home. There’s no way I could do that without going nuts.

I’d be willing to drive a small motorhome at lower speeds like 55~60 MPH, but only if it can travel at least 300~400 miles between fill-ups.

The entire exercise simply drives home the point that battery technology and power storage configurations still have a long way to go.

~120, ~84, ~74 miles.

Looks like they overnighted once at a campground and charged there (not to full, however since its such a big battery in the X, only got to about 88% before moving on).

Its part of the "challenge" of driving an EV, but if I had to do it regularly yeah I wouldn't.

On the Mach-E forums there are a lot of 1st time EV'ers discussing long road trips and many have already decided to keep a gas car for long trips because the extra 30 minutes or so per every 2+ hours is too much (then one thread broke down into a discussion of how many times humans pee per day ! LOL).

Jamie,
Are you gonna trade that Mach-E for the 1400 horsepower race edition?
Who cares about range? The tires could never stand that punishment!

Kind of can't: That 1400 horsepower "edition" isn't an edition, its a one off hand built custom thing just for "playing around with".

Besides, it only has 56.8kWh of battery the one I ordered has 98kWh of battery...

On the other hand it has 7 electric motors: 3 on the front axle and 4 on the rear.

It's a one-off: for now!
If the public starts clamoring for it: who knows what might happen?

LOL sure you can get one but the cost will be much more than an RV!

They will already be making a GT model (due out next year).

I'm sure some aftermarket company will make an aero kit to make your Mach-E look like that one.
