Dash Cam with record capability

Not sure if this subject has been discussed. A search did not reveal a discussion of it and if it has please steer me in that direction as I missed it....

Thinking seriously about a dash cam for recording what goes on in front of me while traveling. After a days travel, compile each day and pick and choose what footage is used for a compilation of a trip. (beside recording any tragic events that can happen while traveling)

Does anyone employ one of these units ? If so, do you have any input as to your likes or dislikes with your experience ? Price ?
Make and model if your in love with your unit.... Is GPS essential? Do you use the voice recording on it or is this not a factor for having one ?

Never had one, nor have I ever seen one, just thought they have come down in price to the point where they may be a great tool to have in the travel chest ?

Thanks in advance !

Most dash cam footage is very boring.i have 2 and I use them both just for the rare occasion that something exciting happens while I happen to be pointing my vehicle at it.any footage you actually use will just be snippets of start and finish on the trip.

I also have two, one in each car, and just have them recording in case of an incident. You could use them to start a YouTube channel on how poorly folks drive but I personally have no time for that. Plenty of good footage of bad driving here in the Northeast.

As an alternative you could pick up a DJI Osmo mount for your phone (its basically a steadicam) and let your phone record stuff. The resulting video would be much smoother than anything a dashcam produces--far better for publication.

The Long Long Road (formerly 48in366) uses one for their videos:

(Watch the RV's dash move around while the video is rock steady--even on the dirt roads.)

Before you buy go to YouTube and search for Car Cam Central, there are good real world reviews of dash cams. Based on the reviews I bought a Yi Dash Cam for the coach, mostly for accident recording. The Yi is relatively inexpensive, has a phone app for transferring video, and works great! There are many other brands that have good reviews based on how much money you want to spend and what you intend to use it for.

SuperD: Did you get the "Dash Camera" or the "Ultra Dash Camera"?
That Ultra Dash Camera looks really slick!

I have the regular Yi, the Ultra was not out when I bought mine over a year ago. The Ultra does look pretty good!

I don’t have a specific picture of how my dash cam is mounted but you can kinda see it in this picture. I used a sticky disc on the dash and then an old suction mount phone holder. I didn’t want to mount on the windshield, would have to take it off every time I parked due to heat when closing the shade. The mount I made works well and it’s getting a good view thru the windshield.

We've been using a go-pro knockoff and it works pretty good. We find we don't use the microphone, so I wouldn't be concerned about that. I am researching a dash cam for the purpose of a possible accident while traveling. I'm concerned about insurance fraud and want to document any possible incidents....like that 20-something that decides the space you leave in front of you for safe stopping is perfect for their little car

I've been looking at this one and it's got some great reviews. I really like the 60fps in 1080p:

We found a Garmin dash cam on Amazon for under $90 that uses a microSD card for storage of the footage. Once it gets full, it records over the previous footage unless you swap cards... and we haven't found a need for that!

Yep, all the DashCams do that.

It use the same phone app as my older Yi. Yi continually updates the app on a regular app, it just keeps getting better. Based on my experience with Yi I can certainly recommend their products.

I’ve been thinking about getting a new dash cam for my daily driver, after looking at the new Yi I’m pretty sure I’m sold!
