OK. What's the secret?

I'm trying to prevent my steps from staying extended when I lock it up (salesman switches off). I've tried every imaginable combination and I can't get them to retract.

Suggestions?

Steps are run from the chassis battery.

Since I have no clue what "combinations" you have tried I'll just explain that you you should have a STEP SWITCH.

When in OFF, the steps stay extended when parked so opening the door doesn't cycle the steps.

When in ON the steps cycle every time the door is open/closed.

Your STEP SWITCH must be in OFF.

Well said. The Store/Use switch aka "salesman switch" should not have any affect on the steps. That's one thing that a battery disconnect would stop.

Find that step switch. That's the answer.

The step switch is almost always very close to the battery switch

Showed my neighbor how to dry winterize his Precept yesterday. His master power is at floor level inside the door. The step switch is on the control panel in the hall.

This person never winterized his rig and would go to the storage yard every time temps dropped below freezing to make sure everything was good. He didn’t even drain the fresh water or hot water tanks.

Since I had 3 I gave him the air hose adapter we used and recommended he purchase a small compressor to take along.

Your steps should automatically retract when you start up the motor home engine as a safety feature. You will need to check the switch for the steps. They also use a magnetic switch to make contact with the door to operate the steps. You can do a search on YouTube on how to trouble shoot the steps.

Seems like an odd place for something by the door

Going to watch for that when we look at some new rigs

only way i figured out was to have the step switch on so when i closed the door the steps retracted. then i reach thru the door and turn off the battery switch
crude but effective for me

Steps should be wired to Chassis batteries, not house bank

My door magnet fell off one time and it did not retract unless the engine was started. Make sure your door magnet and sensor are intact, and also find that step switch.
