Luckily I have not had it removed but have seen others when in for service.
Hatch or bed does usually require removal for access to the top

Access to the top of the engine is done by removing everything out of the under side of the bed. If this has not been done before, use a magnet to fined the screw fasteners. Remove them. I used a black permanent marker to mark where the screws in the carpet. Start pulling the carpeting free from the side or front edge. It is stapled. follow it down until you get to the edge of the hatch. Use a utility knife to cut the carpet from around the hatch. I used my pneumatic stapler to put the carpet back on. Then stapled the carpet around the hatch cover and on to the cover. I added drawer handles on the front of the hatch. Pull up and out of the bed opening. You will now see your engine. If you need it worked on in the future, it will save a lot of labor dollars. If you do bring it in for service, do remove everything under the bed first.
