Windsport House Batteries

I just took delivery of my Windsport 34J. It has two house batteries. Under Standard Equipment the literature and the window sticker say "Tray for (2) Additional House Batteries". The folks at my Camper's World, while very helpful, said they have never been asked about this and don't really know where or what this is. There is some room where the house batteries are but no "tray" that I can see. Does anyone have any idea what or where this tray is?
Thanx,
Dan

I saw wordage that said " battery tray that holds up to 4 house batteries". Maybe they meant 4 six volt batteries.

As part of our deal, we asked the dealer to replace the standard batteries and add 2 more (for a total of 4 Group 31 batteries) so it can be done. I would imagine it would be easier to take the two current batteries out and then position all 4 and then wire them as they sit. Our tray (in the 35C) had more than enough room for all 4 batteries.

My 2014 32A has more than enough room in the battery area (with the hydraulics for the jacks) to add 2 more batteries...
It's not a 'tray' in my mind like my old Infinity had... that slid out for easy access - and had room for 3 batteries.

I asked this on the Thor contact site. The first answer I received was sorta snippish (no way would they send something like that out) so I sent him a copy of my window sticker. Here's his answer, "It’s a typo. It should say “A tray that will hold two additional batteries”. It’s poorly worded. I apologize for the confusion."
Thanx,
Dan

Dan,

Did you end up adding additional house batteries? We just took delivery of our '17 34J in February and I also have had Camping World look into adding more. They said that based on the space in the compartment that there was only room to add one battery (for three total). Looking at the space it looks like you may be able to slip one behind the existing two battery tray and then add a 4th between the tray and the hydraulic pump.

I am curious what you (or anyone else with a 34J) have been able to do with respect to adding more house batteries.

Charlie

Windsport Batteries

Hi Charlie,
I just got my new Windsport back from CW and haven't had a chance to try and figure it out yet. The only time I dry camp is tailgating at Auburn home games and the present setup should handle that OK. I've about decided to wait until the factory stuff dies and replace everything together. I've read extensively on it and starting out with a matched set of whatever you install (6v, 12v or combo) seems to be the magic key to long-term success.
Thanx,
Dan

Also have a 2017 Windsport 34F. Same issue. Would also like to know who you contacted so that I may get my 4 battery tray as per my paperwork as well. Also see that I am supposed to have a 1800 watt inverter and I do believe we only got a 1000 watt one. You seem to have to double check everything. Thanks!

The dealer got it set up for me. They sent the new battery box to the closest dealer and it wasn't even close to fitting. Haven't chased it down from there.

Haven't checked the 1800 watt inverter yet. Thanks for the heads up.

You pay more money and carry more weight...
But if you boondock often - or otherwise need to run for extended periods without shore/genny power - increased battery capacity can help.
(You aren't adding voltage - additional batteries are wired in parallel - so they add capacity.)

More common to add batteries if you have an inverter to convert 12vDC to 110 AC - and with high loads like residential refrigerator that can't cool on propane... or just live 'off the grid' more often.

We added two more batteries and upgraded all to Group 27 Interstates for boondocking, along with adding 400 watts of solar panels so less need of the genset when off the grid. So far it has worked out well.
