Strange tire wear on class C

I have a 2018 Chateau 31E (Ford E450 chassis), and I have some strange front tire wear going on. The right front has some scalloped wear happening in the center tread as shown in the photo.

This happened with the previous set of tires as well, and since then I got new tires and a custom alignment with camber/caster bushings installed and 5+ degrees of caster. The shocks are fairly new Bilstein HD shocks. I checked for anything loose in the suspension -- tie rod ends, ball joints, wheel bearing -- but couldn't find anything obviously bad. I have always kept the front tire pressures at 75 psi per the door sticker, and even tried lower pressure for awhile to see if it made a difference, and it did not.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

What brand tire is that and what is the load rating?
It looks like an over pressure problem where the center of the tire is taking the bulk of the weight, so what does the sidewall of the tire show for max pressure? And lastly the load rating might be correct for your Rv when it was unloaded, you need to have the front axle weight with all of your normal things with fuel and water, I would almost bet your too heavy for the load rating of those tires, next set of tires go up a load rating .

I'll side with over inflation on the center part. You describe 'scalloping'. I can't see that from the pic perspective. Regardless, scalloping used to always mean shocks, an out-of-balance condition or both. You say shocks are new. Is it possible it's out o balance. I believe you would feel that in the steering column; particularly for drive wheels. You have the the tire off. Take it to have the balance checked.

Once a tire starts a wear pattern there is n way to change it. Doesn’t look like it continues all the way around the tire from the pic. I would take it to a reputable tire place and ask their opinion. Possibly a belt in the tire defective? Worn shocks would show scalloping on the outside along with alignment issues.

Have the tire shop check your wheels as well and the tires for out of round

You're probably under inflated for your weight also

Find some scales

I know overinflation tends to wear the center of the tire, but my tires have always been kept at the recommended pressure, and this only happens on the right front. Some other folks have suggested underinflation, and I don't think it is this either. I have actually tried lowering pressures 5-10 psi and it didn't make a difference.

This happened on both the previous set of tires (Hankook Dynapro) and the current set (General Grabber HD). Both are load range E tires. When the tire shop installed the new set, I also got a good alignment, and the tires were balanced. So it doesn't appear to be a tire defect, or balance problem, or alignment problem.

You have an alignment issue given the right tire only

Take it to a different shop

Your frame is bent behind that wheel.
The front end aligns, the vehicle doesn't.
Crumple zone.
Check wheel edge to fender well edge on both sides. I'll bet one side is pushed back.
Your custom guy
Aligned it to a bent frame.
Or not.

I think truckers call it
Crabwalk.

A good alignment shop should have lasers on all 4 wheels while checking and adjusting

And should check play in steer tires prior when ut is elevated

I found this on the General tire site. You can send them the photo of your tire and state you issue/s.
Maybe they will know the problem.
Ask a Question
