Ford V-10 Engine Chip
I have a 2018 25 ' Thor Four Winds with a Ford 6.8 Liter V10. Has anyone replaced the stock computer chip with an aftermarket performance and mileage chip? Where did you get it and what kind of changes do you see?
Rick

You don't replace it; you reprogram it.
Everything you need is right here:
https://5startuning.com/product-cate...8l-rv-class-a/
(There are a few people on here that have used a 5-Star tune and are very happy. I don't have one on our RV but I did have one on an earlier F-350. All I can say is zoom zoom zoom.)

It was the first thing I did when I bought it. Made a big difference, most notably in hilly areas. Noticed the different shift points right away. Tow mode is really tow mode now. Helps a lot with downshifting when going down hill.

Ya know... I guess I'm odd. lol. I don't like the transmission down shifting with out me making the decision. It down shifts waaaay to early for me. I never use the tow/haul switch for decelerating. I do use it when climbing a hill.

New owner of a 2017 24F and we haul it from 1000' up to 7000'+ regularly.
Our former tow vehicle was a Chevy w/ fifth wheel and factory tow haul worked perfectly. The down hill tow haul on the V10 does not release well, without nearly over-reving the RPM. Does the 5 Star program correct this?
Does the 5 Star increase MPG or simply provide better power management?
Thanks

Welcome to the site.
The guys at 5-Star will make the new engine calibration do whatever you want, just call them. They are really great to work with.

Ditto on the 5-star. Had one on a 1997 V-10 Sportsmobile 4x4. For me, it was more about shift points. Will be ordering another for my Axis.

In spite of what you think: the V-10 likes to rev... I can take it just fine!

I would love to do this mod to my Axis but its seems pricey. Not sure if its worth it. But one could always use more power (No such thing as "too much" power - lol).
I was also concerned about it down shifting too much at slower speeds. My RV already down shifts too much when going down steep hills (2 lane hwy). Sometime I put it in N the back to D or 4 low to keep the revs around 3000 - 3500. Othwise it up around 4000K + and drives me crazy.
But from what I hear - the 5 Star tune (on the interstate) will keep it in the gears longer before a down shift so the overall shifting should be less than OEM.
If this goes on sales this winter - I might purchase and do a writeup on it.

Some say they do, some say they dont. From what I have read it sounds like since you have more power on tap you have your foot in it more so your MPG drops.
I think it if your conservative with your foot the overall MPG will be about the same as before the tune (IMO).
Dont purchase for MPG - Purchase for a little more power and better shifting (I hope).

I had a 5-Star on my F-450. It comes with two tunes that you can specify which ones. I picked economy and performance.
Problem was performance was sooo much fun that I never used economy (economy got me maybe .5 to 1 mpg).
On ford-trucks.com they used to say "10 burning and 4 turning" LOL.
The great thing about 5-Star is their customer service: Don't like the tune just give them a call they will tweak it however you like. Don't like the shift points, no problem tweak them a little.

Improvements are possible but won’t be all drastic. This was tested by Motorhome Magazine a while back. Actual data shows additional power and torque, but measured motorhome performance wasn’t affected by more than a few percent.

I just read that article - sounds great! Esp if we can retune the tranny to shift like we want. I wonder how many times you can tweek the tune before they charge you extra?
I also wonder what the gaines are on the 2 valve v10 in my Axis. This test was done on the 3 valve.

The results look great. A lot of increased torque at 3300 rpm. That's a real usable improvement.

I installed the tune on my 2015 ACE back in 2015. Love it. Yesterday I pulled it out and plugged it in out of curiosity and found there were updates to be installed. Not sure what they were for and did send them an email to ask. Anyway I updated and installed. More than anything I like the way it handles the transmission over stock. Can't say I noticed and mileage improvement as your foot blurrs any results. It is definitely worth the investment in my opinion.
