E 350 Thor Chateau 24F Fuel Mileage

Took our first trip in our new rv and traveled about 800 miles. Our fuel mileage was 7.25 MPG. We were not towing anything and it was just me, the DW and our dog Scout. We were not fully loaded, fresh water full, holding tanks empty. Is this normal or will it improve as it gets broken in? Plan on changing to full synthetic and new air filter at 3,000 miles. Currently we have only 2200 miles on the clock.

How fast were you driving? On highway, speed is far more important than a little extra weight you may be carrying. For city driving, weight is much more important.

In Class Cs I’ve measured from 6 to 10 MPG as common. High speeds or city driving drags down average.

Speed was 65 - 70 MPH. Was a very windy both travel days. And yes, it has the V-10

It's not going to improve with time. The only thing that will improve it is your right foot. I had a 22' Four Winds, mileage too terrible to mention, then got a 29" Freedom Elite, still too terrible to mention. It's about the frontal area, that is akin to a billboard and trying to push it down the road at 70+.

Usually I stay below 70 and avoid getting run over on the interstates in Arizona which are posted at 75. This can be challenging due to most others running 80 plus. I was just curious if there was a break-in period having never owned a Ford V-10. My past experience with new vehicles has been to change out the air filter at 3000 miles with a Fram. I have found all of those air filters from the factory to have some type of oil fouling and replacing usually will improve the fuel mileage. The Full Synthetic also seems to help

Thor Chateau 23U, Ford V-10 & yep, 7.7 MPG is what I get!
Fighting the wind and heavy right foot are the deciding factors. We do a little better sticking to secondary roads and cruising at a leisurely pace!

I have a Fourwinds 24F on E450 and get about 9.2 mpg. Mileage went up considerably after 4000 vehicle miles. Ford recommends not measuring mpg until 3500 miles. Neighbor has a year newer model like mine on a E350 and claims to get 10.1 - he doesn’t drive above 60 and drives backroads most of the time.

We normally keep it at or below 60 mph, and we get right around 10 mpg...
(E-450 with the V-10.)

Our 26 ft Freedom Elite got 8.1 mpg on its first long trip and managed to “improve” to about 8.5 with about 8000 miles of use and Mobil 1 synthetic. The first trip was a windy trip to the Grand Canyon and the second was a tour of the upper peninsula. Drove slower and that probably helped more than anything. But also less “highway” driving in Michigan. I think mid 8s is about as good as it gets on an E450 motorhome..

We just took a trip out to OC in our E-450 Four Winds 31E, for our eldest DD's commencement. The total trip was ~290 miles and we pumped 42 gallons when we got back. I use Cruise Control on highways and did 70 out and 65 back. We also ran the generator a lot. From all indications (Cummins Onan 4k) the genny uses ~.5 gallons an hour of use at full load. We ran the genny a lot on the way out, there, and none back. I think we would have gotten better milage not running the genny. We are about to embark on a trip to San Fran so we'll see about milage better then. We are going to run a Champion 4k portable genny instead of the Onan for boon docking. Bad experience running the Onan overnight.

Yep, that's about right. 6.9 mpg or about $.40 a mile. I just did 982 miles at about 7 - 7.5 at those speeds without gen running.

My Class C was a lot smaller and lighter than your 24F, and I normally only got around 8 MPG on the Interstates doing 70 MPH, so your numbers seem about right to me also.

With your motorhome being 5 inches wider, taller (many new units like yours now have 84-inch headroom), heavier and also geared lower (most now have 4.56 versus 4.10), it’s not likely you’re going to do a lot better unless you slow down.

I averaged 8.6 ~ 8.7 MPG over a 5,000-mile trip driving a 30-ft Class C of similar dimensions as yours, but had to keep the speed between 60 and 65 MPH. At the beginning of trip I started out at 70 MPH and the first tank of fuel was under 7 MPG. Slowest speeds where through scenic mountain roads and it resulted in best fuel economy.
