Water Heater Making Fan Noise?

I only fire up the WH when needed to try and preserve to heating element and get a little more life out of it. I don't know if that's a mistake.

I fired it up this morning and thought I heard a fan running. I went outside to get a closer look and nothing out of the ordinary except the fan sound. It wasn't a hissing sounds and the relief valve wasn't leaking. It eventually stopped. I turned the heater off and gave it some time to cool and fired it back up. Same thing. I don't see any signs of a leak, so I'm guessing it isn't re-filling.

Anyone have any ideas about what's going on? The water pressure here is very low.

Thanks.

Apologies. Forgot about those. Tank - 6g two-way: electric/propane.

no such thing as a 'fan' on a water heater, only the electric element, which you would not hear, and the propane, which would fire like a jet...

maybe what you're hearing is a slight buzz of the electric element as it is being supplied 120v power...

No fan or moving parts on those to make noise. You may just be hearing standard electric water heater noises as the heating element heats up and things around it expand. You may also get a little boiling around the element itself at low water pressures until the natural circulation in the tank gets going to "cool" the element.

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you. It only started here. I'll keep an eye on it. It's not replacing it that bothers me as much as being without until I can replace it.

Well it does have built-in redundancy:

Gas heat or electric heat or both.
